About Ravens Among Us

There is a story in the Bible where God tells Elijah to go into the wilderness with a promise that He will send ravens with meat and bread to Elijah.  (1 Kings 17:3-6) This story brings to mind the people who have acted as ravens for me, bringing nourishment to the wilderness places of my life. So many times people have spoken kind words to me in sad moments, given to me when I was in need or encouraged me to reach my goals when even the effort of reaching seemed impossible.

The raven is a scavenging creature, unlikely to share with anyone, but God changed the nature of the ravens and used them to help Elijah. As with ravens, it would be easy for people to be selfish and self absorbed, and yet, there are so many ravens among us, who carry to us gifts from God. There are those who often seem to be called to do something special and who naturally and graciously come up beside us and share their wisdom, strength and talents. So many of these wilderness ravens – teachers, musicians, friends, speakers, physicians, counselors, pastors, comedians, mentors – often remain relatively anonymous among the world at large, but make a poignant and lasting difference in the lives of those they contact.  I would like to share the bread of a few ravens with you. I hope you find their stories inspiring and entertaining.
